The Bluebird Cafe
Green Hills (about 20 minutes from downtown)
A tiny strip-mall room where songwriters sit in the round and play the hits they wrote for other people. Two shows a night; it is a hushed, listening crowd.
Tip: Reservations are only online, up to six seats per order, and many shows sell out quickly.
The Station Inn
402 12th Ave S, the Gulch
A modest listening room open since 1974 and one of the best bluegrass venues anywhere, with bluegrass, classic country and Americana seven nights a week. The Sunday bluegrass jam is a treat.
Rudy's Jazz Room
809 Gleaves St, near the Gulch
Nashville's first dedicated jazz club: Persian rugs, a Steinway grand and live jazz six nights a week, with gumbo, po'boys and beignets from a New Orleans-inspired kitchen. Gypsy jazz on Thursdays.
Skull's Rainbow Room
222 Printers Alley
A 1948 Printers Alley supper club, revived: dinner with a pianist, live jazz every night and a late burlesque show on Friday to Sunday. The most grown-up night out downtown.
Ryman Auditorium
116 Rep. John Lewis Way, Downtown
The "Mother Church of Country Music", a former tabernacle with church-pew seating and famous acoustics. Catch any concert here if the calendar lines up; daytime tours run too. The Opry returns to the Ryman for a stretch each winter.
Husk

Southern ingredient-driven cooking in an 1880s mansion a few blocks from Broadway, with a garden on site and a menu that changes twice a day.

Yes. Beyond Broadway there are listening rooms like the Bluebird Cafe and the Station Inn, Rudy's Jazz Room, the Skull's Rainbow Room supper club, the Ryman and the Opry, and excellent restaurants.
How do you avoid bachelorette parties in Nashville?
Visit Lower Broadway in the afternoon, and spend evenings in the Gulch, Germantown or Printers Alley, at listening rooms and supper clubs rather than the multi-storey honky-tonks.
