Red Rock Canyon
About 30 minutes west of the Strip
A 13-mile scenic loop through red sandstone and desert trails. From October 1 to May 31, entering the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. needs a timed reservation on Recreation.gov plus the vehicle fee.
Tip: Reservation slots open 30 days ahead at 7 a.m. Pacific.
Hoover Dam
About 45 minutes southeast
The 1930s dam on the Arizona line. Power Plant Tour tickets are sold through the Bureau of Reclamation's contractor; the longer Guided Dam Tour is sold only on site, first come, first served.
Tip: Mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. and mid-afternoon are quieter.
Valley of Fire State Park
About 50 miles northeast
Nevada's oldest state park: flaming red sandstone, petroglyphs and short trails. Day entry is per vehicle (higher for out-of-state plates); the park is open sunrise to sunset.
Tip: Avoid midday in summer; carry more water than you think.
Seven Magic Mountains
Near Jean, off I-15 south
Ugo Rondinone's seven towers of day-glo painted boulders in the desert, free and open sunrise to sunset. The installation has been extended to May 31, 2027.
Which one to choose
- Short on time: Seven Magic Mountains (free, about 30 minutes south, an hour on site).
- Best scenery for the effort: Red Rock Canyon. Remember timed entry from October 1 to May 31.
- For history and engineering: Hoover Dam. Buy Power Plant Tour tickets ahead; the Guided Dam Tour is on-site only.
- The most beautiful: Valley of Fire. Give it a full day and avoid midday heat in summer.

- Carry more water than you think, plus sun hats; there is little shade.
- Start early. Mornings are cooler and the light is better for photos.
- Phone signal can be patchy; download offline maps before you go.
