Downtown is where Las Vegas started, and for a lot of grown-up travellers it's now the better half of town: cheaper tables, the city's only 21+ resort, a speakeasy with sixteen seats and dinner under a glass dome. The Fremont Street canopy is loud; step a block away and it's a different city.

The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, set in a historic downtown federal building. Thoughtful, well-made exhibits that are far better than the name suggests.

The only 21+ resort in the city, so the casino floor has no strollers and no teenagers. Downtown table minimums tend to be friendlier than on the Strip.

A 21+ pool amphitheater with six temperature-controlled pools, swim-up bars and a giant screen showing the big games. Open year-round; day passes are sold to non-guests.
Oscar's Steakhouse

A steakhouse under the Plaza's glass dome (the one in the film Casino), named for former mayor and mob lawyer Oscar Goodman, looking straight down Fremont Street.
The Neon Museum
Las Vegas Blvd N, Downtown
An outdoor boneyard of rescued Las Vegas signs, some restored and lit, others spotlit. Evening guided tours run after sunset and fill up; the stories are the best part.

Fremont Street Experience
Fremont Street, Downtown
The canopy-covered pedestrian street with light shows overhead and live bands on the stages. Loud and fun for a short walk; the calmer bars are a block or two away on Fremont East.
Frankie's Tiki Room
W Charleston Blvd, near the Arts District
A 24-hour tiki bar with carved decor by Bamboo Ben and strong specialty drinks at fair prices. A local favourite, not a tourist trap.

- Circa is 21+ throughout, including the casino and Stadium Swim; everyone needs ID.
- The Fremont Street Experience is free, loud and fun for twenty minutes; Fremont East (around Commonwealth) is calmer.
- Table minimums downtown are often lower than on the Strip.
