Asheville is a small mountain city with a big appetite: a Vanderbilt chateau with its own winery, a James Beard-honoured tapas bar, a speakeasy with 800 whiskeys and live jazz in a wine bar every night. Add the Blue Ridge on the doorstep and it's one of the best grown-up weekends in the South.

Biltmore Estate
Biltmore Village entrance, south of downtown
George Vanderbilt's French Renaissance chateau, with a self-guided audio tour of the house, formal gardens and a winery in Antler Hill Village where admission includes a free tasting (21+). Timed tickets; buying online is cheaper.
Tip: Allow a full day; the house alone takes at least two hours at a gentle pace.
Cúrate Bar de Tapas
13 Biltmore Ave
Chef Katie Button's Spanish tapas bar in a restored 1920s bus depot, with a marble bar, jamón carved to order and a long Spanish wine and vermouth list. It won the James Beard award for Outstanding Hospitality in 2022.
Tip: Bar seats at the open kitchen are the most fun for two.
The Crow & Quill

A dim, antique-filled speakeasy behind a green door marked only "106", with theatrical cocktails and a collection of more than 800 whiskeys. Opens at 5 p.m.

A small wine bar and listening room with live music seven nights a week, mostly jazz, swing and gypsy jazz, and no cover most nights. Cheese and charcuterie boards to go with the wine.
The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn
290 Macon Ave
A 43,000-square-foot underground spa of stone arches and tunnels, with waterfall pools, a lap pool under 6,500 fibre-optic stars, saunas and eucalyptus steam rooms.
Tip: Book a treatment to use the pools and plan to linger for the afternoon.
Craggy Gardens & Craggy Pinnacle

Heads-up: Parkway repairs continue north of here; check the NPS road status page before you drive.
The easiest big view near Asheville: a 1.5-mile round trip through a rhododendron tunnel to a 360-degree summit. The visitor center and Craggy Pinnacle trail reopened in September 2025 after Helene repairs.
Asheville after Helene
Hurricane Helene flooded much of the River Arts District and damaged roads and trails across the mountains in September 2024. Two years on, downtown, Biltmore and the Grove Park Inn are fully open, the Craggy Gardens section of the Parkway north of the city is open, and Chimney Rock State Park reopened in June 2025. Some Parkway sections further north are due to reopen by the end of 2026, and River Arts District studios are reopening one by one. Visiting helps: the local economy runs on travellers.
Worth knowing
- Downtown is compact and walkable, and the South Slope brewery district is just below it.
- Biltmore needs a full day. Your ticket includes a complimentary wine tasting at the winery (21+).
- Several good places close early in the week (Jargon on Wednesdays, Sovereign Remedies on Tuesdays, the Funkatorium on Tuesdays and Wednesdays), so plan your big nights for later in the week.
- Mountain weather changes fast. Bring a layer for the Parkway, even in summer.

How many days do you need in Asheville?
