The Funk Zone and the Urban Wine Trail
Funk Zone, between State St and the beach
More than 20 tasting rooms pouring Santa Barbara County wines, most of them in the converted warehouses, murals and galleries of the Funk Zone, with a second cluster on Anacapa Street and El Paseo downtown.
Tip: Pick three rooms rather than ten, and book ahead at weekends.
The Lark
131 Anacapa St, Funk Zone
Seasonal Central Coast cooking designed for sharing, with Michelin Guide recognition and a Wine Spectator award. Dinner nightly from 5 p.m.; brunch at weekends.
Tip: The Funk Zone's best table: reserve well ahead for Friday and Saturday.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse
1100 Anacapa St
A working courthouse and Spanish Colonial Revival showpiece, with the painted Mural Room and a clock-tower observation deck looking over red roofs to the sea. Free, including hour-long docent tours daily at 2 p.m. (and 10:30 a.m. on weekdays).
Tip: The observation deck closes 30 minutes before the building does.
Old Mission Santa Barbara
2201 Laguna St
Founded in 1786, the Mission's church and grounds are open on a self-guided tour. Tours run Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch
900 San Ysidro Ln, Montecito
A Michelin-recognised restaurant in a 19th-century citrus packing house, with fireplaces, a creek-side terrace and produce from the ranch garden. Dinner nightly 5 to 9 p.m.; the ranch's Speakeasy bar has live music from 7 p.m.
Tip: Book on OpenTable; this is the special-occasion dinner of the trip.
Santa Ynez Valley wine country
About 45 minutes over the hill from Santa Barbara
Pinot noir and chardonnay from the Sta. Rita Hills, Rhône and Bordeaux grapes further inland, and small tasting-room towns such as Los Olivos and Solvang. A tour with a driver saves arguing over who drives.
On the water
Walk out along Stearns Wharf, see whales with the Condor Express, or take a small-boat sunset sail with your own bottle of wine. For a full day, the boat to Channel Islands National Park leaves from Ventura.

Foot of State St
A wooden wharf built in 1872 at the bottom of State Street, with seafood restaurants, a wine tasting room and views back to the mountains. A good first walk on arrival.
Tip: The wharf and the harbor are different places, so check which one you're meeting at.
Condor Express Whale Watching
Santa Barbara Harbor, 301 W Cabrillo Blvd
A whale-watching boat into the Santa Barbara Channel with naturalists from the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps. Humpbacks are seen year-round, with gray, blue, minke and killer whales in their seasons.
Tip: Take a layer: it's cooler on the water than on State Street.
Sunset Kidd Sunset Sail
Santa Barbara Harbor, 125 Harbor Way
A 41-foot ketch that takes no more than 16 passengers, and says plainly it's "not a narrated tourist ride". Bring your own wine and picnic in a soft cooler; there's no bar on board.
Channel Islands National Park by boat
Island Packers, Ventura Harbor (about 45 minutes south)
Heads-up: Santa Rosa Island has only a limited reopening to day visitors after fire damage; Santa Cruz Island trips are running.
Island Packers runs the park's boat service to Santa Cruz Island for hiking and wildlife, with an optional add-on to the Painted Cave, one of the world's largest sea caves.
Worth knowing
- Lotusland is open by reservation only, Wednesday to Saturday, until October 31, 2026; book about three weeks ahead.
- The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is closed on Mondays; its First Thursday evenings are free from 5 p.m.
- The Botanic Garden needs an advance reservation, even for a short visit.
- The courthouse, its clock tower and the docent tours are all free.
