A penthouse dining room on top of the Manchester building since 1965, with views over the skyline, the bay and the Pacific, and planes gliding past at eye level on their approach. Recently renovated, with a bigger bar and rooftop patio lounge.
Tip: Ask for a window table at sunset, or just have a cocktail on the patio.

Prohibition Lounge
548 Fifth Ave, Gaslamp Quarter
An underground 1920s-style lounge behind a door marked as a law office on Fifth Avenue, with live jazz, blues, soul and rockabilly bands from about 9 p.m. and proper cocktails.
Tip: Friday and Saturday nights ask for 1920s-style dress; arrive early, as the room is small.
False Idol
675 W Beech St (through Craft & Commerce)
A basement tiki temple from Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, entered through a walk-in cooler inside Craft & Commerce, with carved panels, glowing glass floats and 100-plus rums.
Tip: Reservations open about a month ahead and are strongly recommended.
The Old Globe
Balboa Park
A Tony Award-winning theatre in Balboa Park with three stages, including an outdoor festival theatre, staging new plays, pre-Broadway musicals and Shakespeare. Fall 2026 runs include Topdog/Underdog and the pre-Broadway musical Begin Again.
Tip: Parking in the park has been paid since January 2026; allow time.
La Jolla Cove & the Coast Walk
Coast Blvd, La Jolla
A short clifftop walk along Coast Boulevard past sea lions on the rocks at the cove and Point La Jolla, with the Sunny Jim sea cave (reached down a tunnel through a shop) a few minutes away.
Tip: Go before 9 a.m. in summer, and give the sea lions plenty of room.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Sunset Cliffs Blvd, Point Loma
A mile and a half of sandstone cliffs, arches and caves on Point Loma's ocean side, and San Diego's favourite place to watch the sun go down (and look for the green flash).
Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to find parking, and keep back from the unstable edges.
Where to go at night
The Gaslamp Quarter is where the crowds go, and on a weekend much of it is loud. The better nights are in its corners: a live band at Prohibition Lounge under Fifth Avenue, a reserved seat at Noble Experiment behind a secret door in East Village, or the piano-bar mood of the Plaza Bar at the Westgate. A few blocks north, Little Italy is calmer and better for dinner, with False Idol below Craft & Commerce for a rum nightcap.
Noble Experiment
777 G St, East Village (inside Neighborhood)
A 32-seat speakeasy hidden behind a secret door at the back of the Neighborhood restaurant, with a wall of brass skulls and bespoke cocktails. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 7 p.m.
Tip: Reserve by text message on the day; you'll hear back by early evening whether you're in.
Plaza Bar at The Westgate Hotel
The Westgate Hotel, 1055 Second Ave
An old-world hotel bar with chandeliers, leather chairs and live music from Thursday to Saturday evenings; San Diego Magazine has voted it the city's best piano bar.
Altitude Sky Lounge
San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter, 660 K St
A rooftop lounge 22 floors above the Gaslamp, looking over Petco Park, the bay and Coronado. Opens in the late afternoon or evening depending on the day, and stays open past midnight at weekends.
Tip: It gets busy before and after Padres home games; go early on a game night.
Worth knowing
- San Diego is spread out. Pair neighbourhoods: Gaslamp with Little Italy and Balboa Park; La Jolla with Del Mar; Point Loma with Old Town and Liberty Station.
- The Coronado ferry from Broadway Pier runs hourly and takes about 15 minutes, which beats driving over the bridge.
- Sunset is the main event on this coast. Plan one evening at Sunset Cliffs, one on a rooftop and one on the water.
- Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is closed for construction from September 22, 2026 until about March 2027 (the beaches stay open), so we've left it out for now.
