Asheville in the Fall: Things to Do for Grown-Ups

Fall is Asheville's season. The colour starts on the high peaks and works its way down the mountains for weeks, so you can chase it up the Blue Ridge Parkway in the morning and be back downtown for dinner. Here is when to go this year, where to see the leaves, and how to spend the evenings.

When the colour peaks in 2026

Fall colour in the mountains moves downhill. Explore Asheville's 2026 forecast says a warm September pushed peak colour back by 8 to 12 days: mid-October is the time for the highest elevations, colour should reach about 3,000 feet around October 23, and the city itself is expected to peak in the last week of October, with colour lingering into November. Because the trees are turning in waves, the season should last longer than usual. If your dates are early, drive up; if they are late, stay low.

On the Blue Ridge Parkway

The easy big view is Craggy Gardens, about 40 minutes north at milepost 364: a 1.5-mile round trip to a 360-degree summit. On the way back, stop at the Folk Art Center at milepost 382 for free craft demonstrations, held from March to December. Parkway repairs after Hurricane Helene continue, so check the park service's road status page before you set out.

Biltmore in autumn

Our advice

  • October is Asheville's busiest month: book your hotel and weekend dinners well ahead.
  • Go up the Parkway on a weekday morning; overlooks fill up on October weekends.
  • Pack a warm layer: it is much colder at Craggy Gardens than downtown.
  • Check current hours, road closures and prices before you go; Helene repairs are still under way.

Everything here was checked in September 2026. Asheville is still recovering from Hurricane Helene (2024), so hours, trails and roads change: confirm before you go.
