- Open House Chicago, October 17-18, 2026
- Busy weekend

Architecture in autumn light
The Chicago Architecture Center's river cruise runs until late November, and October's low sun is the best light of the year on the riverfront towers. Book an afternoon sailing. Then plan around Open House Chicago, October 17-18, 2026, the Architecture Center's weekend when buildings across the city open their doors. Out west, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park makes a fine half day among the turning trees.
Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise
112 E. Wacker Dr (riverfront)
A 90-minute cruise aboard First Lady down all three branches of the river, with a docent covering 50-plus buildings and the bascule bridges. The single best introduction to the city. The 2026 season runs mid-March to late November.
Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
Oak Park, about 30 minutes west
Wright's own house and studio, seen by one-hour guided tour, plus a neighbourhood walk past his other early homes. Advance tickets recommended.
Fall colour
For real autumn colour, drive about 26 miles west to The Morton Arboretum in Lisle (about 40 minutes without traffic): woods, prairie and lakes, open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset, with advance online tickets always $2 cheaper than at the gate. Closer in, Lincoln Park and the lakefront path are lovely for a morning walk, and the Lincoln Park Zoo is free every day.
The Morton Arboretum
4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle (about 26 miles west)
Woods, prairie, lakes and a maze garden west of the city, and the Chicago area's best place to walk in fall colour. Open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset; general admission tickets bought online in advance are always $2 less than at the gate.
Tip: Go on a weekday in October; it's about 40 minutes by car from downtown without traffic.
Lincoln Park Zoo and ZooLights
2001 N. Clark St, Lincoln Park
Heads-up: ZooLights runs November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027 only.
A free zoo in Lincoln Park, open 365 days a year (gates at 8 a.m.). In winter it hosts ZooLights: November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, 4:30 to 9 p.m., with advance tickets from $7 to $12 depending on the date, $20 on the day, and free Mondays except December 21 and 28.
Tip: ZooLights is closed on Thanksgiving, December 24 and 25, and on Tuesdays December 1, 8 and 15.
Dates to plan around
The Chicago Marathon is on October 11, 2026: the course closes roads across the city and hotels fill early, so either join the crowds or pick another weekend. Open House Chicago (October 17-18) is the opposite: a weekend worth travelling for.
The culture season
The Lyric Opera opens its 2026/27 season with Don Giovanni, October 10 to November 1, 2026, in the 1929 Civic Opera House. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is back at Symphony Center across from the Art Institute, which is the perfect place for a cool, grey afternoon.

Cosy evenings
When the evenings turn cold, settle into the Green Mill for jazz in Uptown or Andy's near the river, or book a long pasta dinner at Monteverde in the West Loop.
The Green Mill
Broadway, Uptown
The legendary jazz lounge (Al Capone's booth is still there), with live music seven nights a week. Cash only, no reservations, and a serious listening room.
Tip: Arrive by 7:30 p.m. on weekends to get a booth.
Andy's Jazz Club
11 E. Hubbard St, River North
A jazz club since 1951 with dinner and several sets a night. Reservations are required and good for one show; the room clears between sets.
Monteverde
1020 W. Madison St, West Loop
Sarah Grueneberg's pasta-focused Italian restaurant, with pasta made by hand in the middle of the room. Ten years in and still one of the city's most wanted tables.
Our advice
- Mid-October is the sweet spot: river cruises, opera season and fall colour all overlap.
- Avoid marathon weekend unless you're running or cheering; hotel prices jump.
- Bring layers: lakefront evenings get cold fast in late October and November.
- Check current hours, event dates and prices before you go.
