Nashville for two is not a bachelorette weekend. Skip Lower Broadway after dark and the city turns into one of the best places in the country for a listening-room date: songwriters, bluegrass, jazz, a 1948 supper club and dinners worth dressing up for.

A night of music you actually listen to
The date night Nashville does better than anywhere is the listening room. At The Bluebird Cafe, songwriters sit in the round and play the hits they wrote for other people, to a small, hushed room. The Station Inn in the Gulch has done the same for bluegrass since 1974, and Rudy's Jazz Room has a Steinway, Persian rugs and New Orleans-style food. For something bigger, see any show at the Ryman, the old tabernacle with church-pew seats and famous acoustics.

A tiny strip-mall room where songwriters sit in the round and play the hits they wrote for other people. Two shows a night; it is a hushed, listening crowd.
Tip: Reservations are only online, up to six seats per order, and many shows sell out quickly.
The Station Inn

A modest listening room open since 1974 and one of the best bluegrass venues anywhere, with bluegrass, classic country and Americana seven nights a week. The Sunday bluegrass jam is a treat.

Nashville's first dedicated jazz club: Persian rugs, a Steinway grand and live jazz six nights a week, with gumbo, po'boys and beignets from a New Orleans-inspired kitchen. Gypsy jazz on Thursdays.
Ryman Auditorium
116 Rep. John Lewis Way, Downtown
The "Mother Church of Country Music", a former tabernacle with church-pew seating and famous acoustics. Catch any concert here if the calendar lines up; daytime tours run too. The Opry returns to the Ryman for a stretch each winter.
Dinner for two
Skull's Rainbow Room in Printers Alley is the most grown-up night out downtown: a 1948 supper club with a pianist at dinner and live jazz every night. For a quieter, special-occasion meal, book Drusie & Darr in the Hermitage Hotel or Husk in its 1880s mansion. Rolf and Daughters in Germantown is the one for a lively room and handmade pasta.

Watch the sun go down from L.A. Jackson on top of the Thompson hotel in the Gulch; sunset is the calm hour before the DJs. Then walk to The Patterson House, the speakeasy-style bar that started Nashville's cocktail scene, for hand-cut ice and a long classics list.

- Take a quieter hour at the Frist Art Museum, in a 1930s Art Deco post office.
