New Year's Eve in New Orleans for Grown-Ups
New Orleans throws one of the country's best New Year's Eve parties, and the centrepiece is free: a concert on the riverfront and fireworks over the Mississippi at midnight. For grown-ups, the trick is to choose your spot: on the levee in the crowd, on a riverboat, at a seated dinner-dance or in a jazz club on Frenchmen Street.

New Orleans Eve on the riverfront
French Quarter Festivals' free New Orleans Eve concert runs from 9 p.m. to midnight on December 31 in Woldenberg Park on the riverfront, followed at midnight by the Crescent City Countdown fireworks over the Mississippi. The 2026 line-up is not yet published.
On the river
For the fireworks from the water, New Orleans & Company points to New Year's Eve parties aboard the Steamboat Natchez and the Creole Queen, with live music, food and drink. 2026 prices are not yet published; these cruises sell out, so book when they go on sale.
Steamboat Natchez evening jazz cruise
Toulouse Street Wharf, French Quarter
A two-hour evening cruise on a paddle-wheeler, with live jazz from the Dukes of Dixieland and an optional Creole buffet dinner. Corny in the best way, and lovely at sunset.
Dinner, dancing and jazz
The National WWII Museum holds a Dine & Dance New Year's Eve Bash with the Victory Swing Orchestra: a seated, dressed-up way to see in 2027. On Frenchmen Street, the clubs put on New Year's Eve shows; Snug Harbor is the seated listening room, and Preservation Hall runs short sets in the French Quarter. Ticket prices for 2026 are not yet published.
The National WWII Museum
Warehouse District
A huge, moving museum spread over several pavilions. Most people need at least half a day; pick two or three galleries rather than trying to see everything.
Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro
Frenchmen St
Frenchmen Street's seated listening room: modern and traditional jazz sets in a proper concert setting, with Creole cooking in the restaurant downstairs. Come to listen, not to talk.
Preservation Hall
726 St. Peter St, French Quarter
The small, plain room that has kept traditional New Orleans jazz alive since the 1960s. Several short concerts run each evening with a rotating line-up of the Preservation All Stars and other house bands.
Tip: A limited number of seats can be reserved online; the rest are sold at the box office in the afternoon.
New Year's Day
Sleep in, then take a late brunch. The Allstate Sugar Bowl isn't on New Year's Day this season: the 2027 game is a College Football Playoff semifinal on January 15, 2027, at the Caesars Superdome. Celebration in the Oaks in City Park runs through January 1, 2027, for one last walk under the lights.
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park
New Orleans City Park (walking tour entrance: 7 Victory Ave)
Heads-up: Runs November 27, 2026 to January 1, 2027 only.
City Park's holiday lights festival among the old live oaks, a New Orleans tradition since the late 1980s and the park's biggest fundraiser. Runs November 27, 2026 to January 1, 2027, as a walking tour (7 Victory Ave) and a driving tour (4 Friederichs Ave).
Tip: The walking tour is the one to do: you see the oaks up close and can stop for a hot drink.
Commander's Palace
1403 Washington Ave, Garden District
The turquoise Victorian landmark of Creole fine dining. The weekend jazz brunch, with a trio strolling between tables, is the classic grown-up New Orleans meal.
Tip: Jazz brunch runs Saturday and Sunday; book well ahead.
Dress: Business attire; jackets preferred for men, no shorts ever

- Bring as little as possible to the riverfront and expect big crowds.
- If you'd rather sit, book a riverboat, the WWII Museum dance or a seated club now.
- Check current hours, event dates and prices before you go.
