Things to Do in San Diego at Night for Grown-Ups
San Diego's nights start with the sunset, and the city is built for it: cliffs on the Pacific, a penthouse dining room with planes gliding past and a dinner cruise across the bay. After dark the good stuff is tucked away: a 1920s lounge under Fifth Avenue, a speakeasy behind a secret door and a tiki bar through a walk-in cooler. Here's how to fill an evening without the Gaslamp crush.
- Early evening
- Sunset Cliffs, Mister A's or a rooftop
- With dinner
- A harbor dinner cruise or Born & Raised
- Late
- Prohibition Lounge, Noble Experiment, False Idol
- Bring
- A layer: the coast cools fast after sunset

Start with the sunset
Sunset is the main event on this coast. Sunset Cliffs on Point Loma is the classic spot: arrive half an hour early to park and keep back from the edges. For a drink with the view, Mister A's has watched the sun go down over the bay from its penthouse since 1965, and Altitude Sky Lounge looks over Petco Park from 22 floors up. Over on Coronado, the Hotel del's Sun Deck has fire pits facing the Pacific.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Sunset Cliffs Blvd, Point Loma
A mile and a half of sandstone cliffs, arches and caves on Point Loma's ocean side, and San Diego's favourite place to watch the sun go down (and look for the green flash).
Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to find parking, and keep back from the unstable edges.
Mister A's
2550 Fifth Ave, 12th floor, Bankers Hill
A penthouse dining room on top of the Manchester building since 1965, with views over the skyline, the bay and the Pacific, and planes gliding past at eye level on their approach. Recently renovated, with a bigger bar and rooftop patio lounge.
Tip: Ask for a window table at sunset, or just have a cocktail on the patio.
Dress: Business casual
Altitude Sky Lounge
San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter, 660 K St
A rooftop lounge 22 floors above the Gaslamp, looking over Petco Park, the bay and Coronado. Opens in the late afternoon or evening depending on the day, and stays open past midnight at weekends.
Tip: It gets busy before and after Padres home games; go early on a game night.
Hotel del Coronado: Babcock & Story Bar and Sun Deck
1500 Orange Ave, Coronado
The 1888 beachfront hotel's restored mahogany bar opens onto a big patio facing the Pacific, with live music Thursday to Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m.; next door, the Sun Deck has fire pits for the sunset.
Tip: The Coronado ferry from Broadway Pier runs hourly and takes about 15 minutes.
Dinner on the water or a show
A harbor dinner cruise gives you three courses, a glass of Champagne and the skyline lit up past the Coronado Bridge and the Midway. On land, Born & Raised in Little Italy is a glamorous steakhouse with a rooftop bar upstairs. For a seated night out, check what's on at The Old Globe in Balboa Park; fall 2026 runs include Topdog/Underdog and the pre-Broadway musical Begin Again.
Flagship harbor dinner cruise
Broadway Pier, 990 N Harbor Dr
A two-and-a-half to three-hour evening cruise on San Diego Bay: a three-course dinner, a glass of Champagne, skyline views past the Coronado Bridge and the Midway, and a DJ for dancing.
Born & Raised
1909 India St, Little Italy
A glamorous, art deco steakhouse with camel-leather booths, dry-aged steaks and tableside cart service, plus a rooftop bar over the Little Italy rooftops. Listed in the Michelin Guide.
Tip: Book the dining room, then take a drink upstairs on the rooftop.
The Old Globe
Balboa Park
A Tony Award-winning theatre in Balboa Park with three stages, including an outdoor festival theatre, staging new plays, pre-Broadway musicals and Shakespeare. Fall 2026 runs include Topdog/Underdog and the pre-Broadway musical Begin Again.
Tip: Parking in the park has been paid since January 2026; allow time.
Live music
Prohibition Lounge sits behind a door marked as a law office on Fifth Avenue, with jazz, blues and soul bands from about 9 p.m.; on Friday and Saturday they ask for 1920s-style dress. For something gentler, the Plaza Bar at The Westgate has live music Thursday to Saturday evenings, and the Hotel del's Babcock & Story Bar has bands from 6 to 10 p.m. on the same nights. Fans of touring bands should look at the calendar for Belly Up up the coast in Solana Beach.
Prohibition Lounge
548 Fifth Ave, Gaslamp Quarter
An underground 1920s-style lounge behind a door marked as a law office on Fifth Avenue, with live jazz, blues, soul and rockabilly bands from about 9 p.m. and proper cocktails.
Tip: Friday and Saturday nights ask for 1920s-style dress; arrive early, as the room is small.
Plaza Bar at The Westgate Hotel
The Westgate Hotel, 1055 Second Ave
An old-world hotel bar with chandeliers, leather chairs and live music from Thursday to Saturday evenings; San Diego Magazine has voted it the city's best piano bar.
Belly Up
143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach
A beloved beach-town club that has booked touring bands and tribute acts for decades, in a room small enough to see everything. Shows are 21+ with photo ID.
Hidden cocktail bars
San Diego's two best late drinks are both hidden. Noble Experiment is a 32-seat speakeasy behind a secret door at the back of the Neighborhood restaurant in East Village; reserve by text on the day. False Idol in Little Italy is Martin Cate's basement tiki bar, reached through a walk-in cooler, with more than 100 rums; reservations open about a month ahead.
Noble Experiment
777 G St, East Village (inside Neighborhood)
A 32-seat speakeasy hidden behind a secret door at the back of the Neighborhood restaurant, with a wall of brass skulls and bespoke cocktails. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 7 p.m.
Tip: Reserve by text message on the day; you'll hear back by early evening whether you're in.
False Idol
675 W Beech St (through Craft & Commerce)
A basement tiki temple from Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, entered through a walk-in cooler inside Craft & Commerce, with carved panels, glowing glass floats and 100-plus rums.
Tip: Reservations open about a month ahead and are strongly recommended.
Our advice
- Keep each night in one area: Little Italy for Born & Raised and False Idol; the Gaslamp and East Village for Prohibition, Noble Experiment and Altitude; Coronado for the Hotel del.
- Altitude gets busy before and after Padres home games, so go early on a game night.
- Sunset Cliffs and Point Loma are a drive from downtown; book dinner nearby or leave time to get back.
- Check current hours, show times and reservation rules before you go.
Everything here was checked in September 2026. Hours, show runs and reservation rules change, so confirm before you go.
