Austin for two is about music you can dance to, food you'll talk about for years and a few very Texan rituals: the bats at sunset, a swim in a spring-fed pool and a two-step lesson in a 1964 dance hall. Here is how we'd plan a couples' trip.

Sunset and the bats
Around 1.5 million bats stream out from under the Congress Avenue bridge at dusk, roughly mid-March to early November. Watch from the lawn for free, or book a table at P6, the sixth-floor rooftop at The LINE, which looks straight at the bridge across Lady Bird Lake.

Around 1.5 million bats, the world's largest urban bat colony, stream out from under the bridge around sunset, roughly mid-March to early November. Free, and strangely magical.
Tip: Watch from the lawn on the south-east side of the bridge, or from a rooftop like P6.
Dinner for two
Jeffrey's has been Austin's special-occasion restaurant since 1975: dry-aged steaks, classic service and a huge wine list. Uchi is the one for adventurous eaters; go for the omakase. For a late, low-lit dinner with records playing, Justine's Brasserie in East Austin serves until midnight. Geraldine's adds live flamenco, jazz or soul to dinner from Thursday to Sunday.

Tip: Weeknights book about a week out; Saturdays about two weeks.
Uchi
801 S Lamar Blvd
Tyson Cole's non-traditional Japanese restaurant, the place that made Austin a sushi town. Go for the tasting menu or the omakase.
Justine's Brasserie
4710 E 5th St
A French brasserie in a 1937 East Austin bungalow: steak frites, escargot and onion soup, records playing, and the full menu until midnight. Austin's best late dinner.
Geraldine's at Hotel Van Zandt
Hotel Van Zandt, Rainey St (4th floor)
A fourth-floor restaurant and stage above Rainey Street: modern Mexican cooking with Southern touches, and live flamenco, jazz, blues or soul from Thursday to Sunday, plus a Sunday jazz brunch.
Dance, then listen
Take the beginners' two-step lesson at the Broken Spoke (Wednesday to Saturday, 8 to 9 p.m.) and stay for the band; nobody cares how good you are. Donn's Depot, a piano bar in old rail cars, has its own lesson on Wednesdays. For a quieter night, the Elephant Room is a basement jazz bar on Congress Avenue and the Gallery above the Continental Club is a 40-person room for jazz and soul.
Broken Spoke

A honky-tonk dance hall and restaurant open since 1964. Two-step lessons run Wednesday to Saturday, 8 to 9 p.m., then the band takes over. All ages, all abilities.
Tip: Lessons are cash only; arrive half an hour early to park.
Donn's Depot
1600 W 5th St
A piano bar and dance hall in an old Missouri-Pacific depot and rail cars (since 1972), with Christmas lights all year, free popcorn and a crowd of every age. Beginner two-step lessons on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
Tip: Closed Sundays.
Elephant Room
315 Congress Ave (basement)
An old-school basement jazz bar under the 19th-century Swift Building, with live jazz seven nights a week since 1991 and a small cover ($5 to $10).
The Continental Club (and the Gallery upstairs)

South Congress's legendary roots-music club, open since 1955. Upstairs, the 40-person Gallery is a speakeasy-ish room for jazz, soul and songwriters, with regulars like James McMurtry.
By day
- Swim at Barton Springs, a spring-fed pool that stays around 68 to 70 degrees all year (closed Thursdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for cleaning).
- Spend an hour in Ellsworth Kelly's Austin at the Blanton, a small stone chapel of coloured glass.
- Walk the meadows at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, best in spring.
- Give a whole day to Fredericksburg and the Hill Country wineries, with a tour or shuttle so nobody has to drive.
Barton Springs Pool

A spring-fed pool three acres long, around 68 to 70 degrees all year, in Zilker Park. Open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.; $9 for non-resident adults.
Tip: Closed Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for cleaning.
Blanton Museum of Art
MLK Blvd & Congress Ave, UT campus
The university's art museum, home to Ellsworth Kelly's Austin, a light-filled stone chapel of coloured glass. Free on Tuesdays; closed Mondays; open until 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
Fredericksburg & the Hill Country wineries
About 90 minutes west on US-290
A German-settled Hill Country town with a long Main Street and more than 40 wineries along US-290. Take a tour or a shuttle so nobody has to drive.
