Christmas in Charleston for Grown-Ups
Charleston at Christmas is gas lamps, wreaths on old front doors and mild evenings you can still spend outside. The big event is the Holiday Festival of Lights on James Island, but the best of it is downtown: a carriage ride through the decorated historic district, A Christmas Carol in one of America's oldest theatre sites, and long dinners in rooms that already feel festive.

The Holiday Festival of Lights

A Christmas Carol at Dock Street
Charleston Stage performs A Christmas Carol on the MainStage at the Dock Street Theatre from November 29 to December 20, 2026. The theatre stands on the site of one of America's first playhouses, which makes it a lovely room for Dickens.

A historic theatre on the site of one of America's first playhouses, home to Charleston Stage. The 2026-27 season includes A Christmas Carol (Nov 29 to Dec 20) and Les Misérables in spring.
The historic district, decorated
Take an Old South Carriage ride through the old streets in the late afternoon, when the wreaths and window candles show up best. The City of Charleston Holiday Parade and the tree lighting in Marion Square are December traditions, but the 2026 date is not yet published.
Old South Carriage Company

Dinners and nightcaps
For a Christmas dinner splurge, book Peninsula Grill in the 1844 Planters Inn (and save room for the coconut cake), or Charleston Grill, where live music plays every night. Afterwards, The Gin Joint is a dim, pre-Prohibition room for a proper cocktail, and Forte Jazz Lounge has candlelit sets Thursday to Saturday.

Our advice
- Go to the Festival of Lights on a weeknight early in the season, and buy your vehicle ticket online.
- Book Christmas week dinners now; the best rooms fill by early December.
- Bring a warm layer: evenings are mild by northern standards but cool on the water.
