Things to Do in Charleston at Night for Grown-Ups

Charleston after dark is slow, warm and mostly on foot: a sunset sail past the Battery, a rooftop drink as the steeples light up, dinner with a jazz trio and a nightcap in a 19th-century kitchen house. Here is how to plan an evening in the Holy City.

Sunset on the water or a rooftop

The best way to start is aboard Schooner Pride, an 84-foot three-master that sails for two hours as the sun drops behind the steeples, past Fort Sumter and the Battery; sails run from March to early November. On dry land, Citrus Club at The Dewberry is the city's highest rooftop (21+), The Rooftop at The Vendue looks over steeples and water, and the Pavilion Bar has harbour views and gets livelier later.

Our advice

  • Keep the night in the historic district and on King Street: almost everything here is a short walk apart.
  • Book Schooner Pride for your first or second evening so weather doesn't cost you the sail.
  • Forte only has sets Thursday to Saturday; plan your jazz night around it, or go to Charleston Grill any night.
  • Check current hours, show times and sailing dates before you go.

Everything here was checked in September 2026. Seasons, show dates and reservation rules change, so confirm before you go.
