December Nights in Balboa Park
December Nights, the City of San Diego's largest free holiday festival, fills Balboa Park on Friday, December 4, 2026 (4 to 10 p.m.) and Saturday, December 5 (noon to 10 p.m.). The city says it draws more than 350,000 people over the two days, with food, community performers on several stages and the park lit up. It's crowded: go early on Friday evening, and plan to come back another day for the museums at a calmer pace.
Balboa Park & the Botanical Building
El Prado, Balboa Park
The city's great park of Spanish Revival buildings, gardens and museums. The restored 1915 Botanical Building and its Lily Pond reopened in December 2024; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Thursdays.
The San Diego Museum of Art
1450 El Prado, Balboa Park
The city's main art museum, behind a Spanish plateresque facade on El Prado, with European old masters, Asian art and changing exhibitions. Closed Wednesdays; opens at noon on Sundays.
Lightscape at the San Diego Botanic Garden
Lightscape returns to the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas for its fifth season, November 20 to January 3: a one-mile illuminated trail with more than 20 new installations, music and food and drink along the way. It takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes at your own pace, outdoors, rain or shine, with some inclines and dirt sections. Tickets start at $28 for adults (prices vary by date) and are sold through Fever; parking is $15 in advance or $20 on site if space allows. All sales are final, and the popular dates sell out.
The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights
The 56th San Diego Bay Parade of Lights sails on Sunday, December 13 and Sunday, December 20, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m. About 80 decorated boats follow the route along the bay, turning at the pier at Cesar Chavez Park before heading for Coronado. It's free to watch, and the organizers say to arrive early because the top spots get crowded. This year's theme is "Liberty Lights the Bay: Cheers to 250 Years". Watching from a waterfront restaurant or a harbor dinner cruise is the comfortable way to do it.
Flagship harbor dinner cruise
Broadway Pier, 990 N Harbor Dr
A two-and-a-half to three-hour evening cruise on San Diego Bay: a three-course dinner, a glass of Champagne, skyline views past the Coronado Bridge and the Midway, and a DJ for dancing.
Skating by the Sea at the Hotel del
The Hotel del Coronado puts an ice rink on the beach for Skating by the Sea, open daily from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027. You can book a rinkside or oceanside Frostbite Lounge with fire pits and holiday drinks, or just watch from the Sun Deck or the Babcock & Story Bar. The detailed schedule and tickets for 2026 are not yet published. Take the Coronado ferry over and make an evening of it.
